We thought you might want to know that starting Thursday, April 7th, THE SCENE is returning to the PIT.  There will be a heavy Reverse 5 presence (Dan and Micah are hosting and Tim is performing too) in the show, plus lots of extra special guest players.

Reverse 5 Boys Estivate. Bombardo Girls Captivate.

We all know that estivation is the reverse of hibernation.  No doi.  Well, not technically the reverse, maybe more like the inverse of it, or something.  We didn’t mean to get into semantics here.  Hang on, semantics is the right word, right?  (Can you tell Ben isn’t writing these anymore?)

Look, we’re just trying to be clever about the hook for this week’s show because we have a good one.  Show.  Good show.  A pretty good hook too, I guess - have we ruined it?  We’ll save it here with a picture of a sleeping puppy:

What we’re trying to say is that Reverse 5 is about to go into a deep slumber for the rest of summer.  But don’t fret my pets!  THE SCENE will keep going strong until we get back in the hands of some capable friends until we return in the fall.

This week BOMBARDO is destined for improvised one-act greatness and we couldn’t be more excited.  Emily Askin, Chelsea Clarke, Emily Felt, Marcy Jarreau, Beth Newell, Aubrey Plaza, and Erica Warnock are known for their special brand of improv comedy that’s “weird,” “psychadelic,” and “full of cats.”  Cats like these:

Johnny Cash Money and Reverse 5 are Men

Men: we mow lawns, drink from tumblers, and smell like musk. We shape our facial hair like our favorite actors. We shout at other men.

We like pulling things out of our wallets, especially money. We think of our mothers while treating women with respect.

When there’s a heavy thing to lift we grunt, but quietly. If there’s a jerk in the room we eye each other like, “can you believe this jerk?”

We do not know why undershirts get pit stains.

We want to do pull-ups on the subway, but don’t.

We never cry, except when we do, and it’s terrible.

We are men and we like improv. On Saturday, June 19, man-groups Johnny Cash Money and Reverse 5 will take testosterone and make testosteroneade at the People’s Improv Theater.

Johnny Cash Money features the brains behind LandlineTV and other cool projects. They host a monthly show at the Astoria Beer Garden and they are: Michael Antonucci, Paul Briganti, Jaime Castillo, Andrew Ford, and Chris Mann.

Monsters of Scene: Charlie Carrot and Reverse 5

Whither Frankenberry? Whence Scylla and Charybdis? Vampires and zombies are nice, yeah, sure, but what about those lesser-known Satan’s hellspawn, like this guy?

Terrifying, right? Not all monsters get boffo box office and professional PR. To help support endangered monsters, Reverse 5 will invite a truly abhorrent creature into the cavernous PIT, thereby spitting directly into the face of God.

Charlie Carrot is a five-headed mono-beast from the depths of UCB’s stage and indie training grounds. It’s a sin-against-nature-super-group made up of some of our favorite improvisers:

Rafael: lover, fighter, comedians

Rafael was the best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. I mean yeah, Leonardo would always pay the pizza guy, Donatello could build pretty good bongs out of the stuff you might find in a sewer, and Michelangelo occasionally did not make you want to punch him in the nuts. But Rafael kicked ass, took names, and he did it with a pair of miniature tridents. He had the temperament of a six-year-old, which of course we all were.

But Rafael was also the worst Renaissance master. To begin with, he stuck all his stuff on the walls of the Vatican where no non-millionaire could see it. He also adamantly refused to paint sexy naked biblical chicks even after the pope said it was OK! Instead he painted every wrinkled old philosophizing ballsack that ever came out of Greece. Christ, the guy couldn’t even paint a solid non-crappy dragon, something even a six-year-old artist manages to figure out. Up yours, Rafael!

But the most relevant modern-day Rafael would have to be the terrific improv group made up of Dan Black, Joe Burns, Don Fanelli, Cathryn Mudon, Hunter Nelson, and Andrew Yurman-Glaser. They’re playing at THE SCENE with Reverse 5 this Saturday. Buy your tickets now, before the pope outlaws them or they’re defeated by the Shredder. Jokes!
